Gamers tend to have a love-hate relationship with video game sequels. Some are great while others are ignored and players pretend they don’t exist. As gamers, once you play an amazing game, you sometimes don’t want the story to end.
What’s your definition of a good video game sequel? Does it need to have the same characters or just follow the franchise’s plot and setting? How about the gameplay style?
For me, a sequel would need to have some familiar characters along with a similar, if not the same, gameplay style. New lands to explore are wonderful, as I’m sure the characters’ world is so much bigger than the original game led us to believe.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is an example of one of our favorite sequels. It has Mario, the same partner concept as the original, and another engaging storyline that echoes the first Paper Mario. Super Paper Mario was decent, but we did miss the partner aspect along with the other key elements that had made it Paper Mario. Playing as Luigi and Bowser were interesting, though.
We’re not even going to talk about the disappointment that was Paper Mario: Sticker Star.
The sequels in the original Ace Attorney trilogy were wonderful as well. Apollo Justice and Dual Destinies tweaked the formula a bit, sometimes unnecessarily in my opinion, but they did fine nonetheless. I’m looking forward to seeing what the next game will bring about.
There were games with less than stellar sequels in terms of storyline and gameplay. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, the sequel to Path of Radiance, was merely okay. The newer characters were not my favorite and they totally butchered the support system.
Then there are games that are getting sequels despite the fact that the original games weren’t great at all. Sonic Boom, anyone?
