Game Openings

game trailers double jump

With the technology we have, game openings and cut scenes are more akin to movie trailers than an actual video game. Most of them are utterly gorgeous and really do a fantastic job of pulling the player into the game.

I always like to watch the opening scene before the main menu mostly because the songs are catchy. However, as Kris said, the openings are beginning to look more like movie trailers. And I’m not opposed to that. I think it makes the video game seem more real, if that makes any sense.

It does. The opening cinematic does exactly what it’s supposed to. I believe one of my recent favorites was the opening for the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. I also really enjoyed the music and opening themes for some of the older Sonic the Hedgehog games, like Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and Sonic Heroes, even if the games themselves weren’t the best.

Skyward Sword is one of the best. Ah, yes! The Sonic games… the openings made up for the games themselves. Even the newer Pokemon games have great openings. They show the world, the different species of Pokemon, battle sequences, and more.

It’s all great fun, and a brilliant way to introduce us to the new worlds. Another of my favorites are the openings for the Super Smash Brothers franchise. Those are lots of fun to watch before diving into a fight!

The Smash games are great because they showcase what the different characters can do. I think they’re trying to make the games more and more appealing, but I think they’re doing just fine!

It’s definitely exciting to see how far these openings and cut scenes will go. Combined with voice acting and special effects, it’ll eventually seem like we’re controlling characters in movies rather than games!

What about you? What are your favorite game openings?

  1. This is a little more obscure, but I love the opening for Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon for the Nintendo 64. It had an actual hot-blooded vocal song by the singer of the original Dragon Ball Z themes, It played out as if it were a real anime opening, complete with giant robots!
