Friday Favorites: New Games

Double Jump Kris Mii

Since starting this blog, I’ve come to the realization that I don’t play as many games as I thought I did. I mean, I’ve been gaming since I was old enough to pick up a controller, but my gaming tends to be limited in my favorite franchises. The Legend of Zelda and Pokemon, with the occasional Mario, games dominate most of these posts.
In recent years, video games and everything that’s associated with them (story, art, characters, software, etc.) became more important to me, and I’ve been trying to find different games to try. Below are some of my favorite “newer” finds.

4. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Alright, so this series isn’t exactly new, but it’s definitely a gem. We had found it on the Wii’s Virtual Console and, having never heard of the series, had decided to give it a go. Gaming wasn’t exactly a serious pursuit at that point, but it was a key game in opening up my mind to everything gaming could be — the writing, the characters, the stories themselves are amazing, and were an inspiration to keep following this art form.

That, and this series was played not only with Rachel but also with our elder sister Lisa. Lisa’s not a big gamer at all, but to be able to share this series with both my sisters will always make it special to me.

3. Assassin’s Creed

I haven’t played this game yet, but it is there on my to-do list. This game series always seemed interesting to me and it was bought on a whim when Rachel and I were looking for more games for our PlayStation 3. Hopefully it’ll be a great game and open some more doors for us, genre-wise!

2. Batman: Arkham series

I was supposed to play the first game of this series a couple of months ago, back when Rachel and I were challenging each other to play a game that the other hadn’t played before. Because our XBox 360 died, I still haven’t been able to give this game a shot. However, Rachel has played it, and it was definitely not the kind of game I would ever think of my sister playing. Seeing her try out the combat-heavy, dark-themed Batman game was awesome — like the Phoenix Wright series, the Arkham franchise opened our eyes to new games and styles of play.

1. Minecraft

Rachel touched upon this game already on this blog, and this probably won’t be the last time you hear about it from us, haha! When Minecraft first came out, I honestly thought it seemed a bit silly and didn’t see much of a point to it. Sure, there are some people who can create some fantastic pixel art with the block style of the game, but it wasn’t until Rachel and I watched some streams of the game from our favorite YouTubers that we got interested enough to try it.

Of course, our first go-round with the game, the XBox 360 version, wasn’t that great, but after getting our desktop and then a gaming laptop, Minecraft was always one of the first games we wanted to try out. The game has been great so far, even if it is just Rachel and I trying to survive (and failing at times) in the world!

What are some of your favorite newer games?

  1. I love love love the Phoenix Wright series so much, and it’s also one of my favorite newer games. I guess I’m considering “new” anything after the N64 era, haha. It’s awesome that you’re enjoying Minecraft so much too. I’ve only played some of Arkham City and Origins, but I see the big appeal of those games. I have yet to play Assassin’s Creed though. I don’t know much about the series, to be honest, though they tend to look great.

Some newer series I have begun enjoying within the past few years have been Xenoblade Chronicles (and its sequel), Danganronpa (which is similar to the Phoenix Wright series), Zero Escape, Professor Layton, Bravely Default, and recently, Yo-kai Watch, to name a few!

    • Xenoblade Chronicles and Bravely Default are two series that definitely intrigue. I’ll have to remember them for my “to splurge” list! I’ve never heard of Danganronpa, but if it’s similar to Phoenix Wright, I’ll have to look into it!

      • It’s very similar in that there are trials and murder mysteries with anime characters. Just like in Phoenix Wright, you have to find contraditions and object to them. In Danganronpa, you use truth bullets against conflicting testimony. What makes it different is that all of the trials are in tribunal style with up to 15 participants so they’re all trying to solve it together. Also, they’re trapped in school with an evil bear. It’s great. My wife and I played it all at once last year! We were hooked! There are two main games with a third game coming out soon and a spinoff that was released.

  2. Oh this is tough. Legend of Zelda is one of my timeless, favorite series and I just watched Let’s Plays of Phantom Hourglass followed by Spirit Tracks. Mass Effect is one of my favorite series, too. It’s hard for me to think of recent games, because I’m more of an old school gamer and the older Final Fantasies are my favorite with that being my favorite series of all time. I’m trying to be more open to newer games, and in fact I’m very interesting in ones such as ABZU and Hyper Light Drifter, but I haven’t played them yet. I keep hearing nothing but good things about Phoenix Wright.

I think my favorite “recent” game is probably Dear Esther. I love stories that are vague, mysterious, and have a taste of the eerie attached.

    • Mass Effect is something that I’ve been keeping an eye on, definitely one for my “someday” list of video games. I need to play more Final Fantasy games, I only tried playing one of them many years ago! If you like mysteries and a taste of the eerie, DEFINITELY pick up the Phoenix Wright series! The original trilogy is available as a package deal for download on the 3DS, I believe. It’s a bit wacky, but very entertaining, with solving crimes, puzzling out evidence in court, and there’s spirits and ghosts! 🙂

      • Mass Effect will be totally worth your time when you get to it! I’m highly enjoying the Let’s Play I’m watching, and I’m sure that’s part the player and part it’s just an epic game!

Which Final Fantasy did you try to play? I started with VI, which many consider the best one of them all. I love that game, but VII will always be my favorite. I’m doing a great play/replay and review of them all and currently finished IV, which is another high on my list. I need to start working on the review before I can play the next. My ridiculous self-rules.

You’re the third person to talk to me about Phoenix Wright today! It’s on my backlog, but I need something to play while I’m in between Final Fantasies. I’ll definitely be checking it out since I’ve heard nothing but good things. I adore wacky and entertaining. That description combination makes me think of Doctor Who lol.

      • It was Final Fantasy 7, actually. I know a remake is supposed to come out for the PS4, so if we ever get that console, Final Fantasy 7 may be up on our wishlist.
But, yes, please check out Phoenix Wright! It’s an amazing series! xD
