Top Tuesday: Favorite Aspects of the Nintendo Switch

Rachel Mii Double JumpHappy Tuesday!

Kris and I finally own the Nintendo Switch! We wanted to so an unboxing post, but since the Switch has been out for a month now, there have been so many unboxing posts and videos that it’s a bit redundant at this point.

So, for today I decided to talk about my first initial thoughts about the Switch as we opened it. My favorite things about it, I guess you could say, before we started playing any games.

Top Tuesday: Favorite Things about the Nintendo Switch

1. The Joy-Con Size

I’ve heard a lot of people be skeptical about the size, especially if you have big hands. I was never worried because I’m petite. And even when it came out, most people with that worry found the size to actually be okay. Well, when I first picked up the Joy-Con, I immediately felt comfortable. It was as though Nintendo said, “Let’s make this console Rachel-size!”

2. The Joy-Con Variations

I know most people recommend the pro controller over the Joy-Con. The pro controllers are still sold-out no matter where we go, so the Joy-Con have to do for now. However, I like how we can use the Joy-Con three different ways off the bat. By themselves like Wii-motes, on the console itself like a 3DS, or attached to a mini controller-like thing mocking the pro controller.

3. The Home Menu

It mocks the menu on the 3DS and I think that’s so cool. Granted, the Wii and Wii U were like that, but this is a slight different set-up which I think is awesome. It’s slightly different and it’s simple.

4. Notifications

We got a bundle through Gamestop so our console came with Breath of the Wild, the game guide, Has Been Heroes, and the Snipperclips digital code. We downloaded Snipperclips onto the console and while it was downloading we decided to play Zelda. When the game finished downloading, a notification appeared in the top left corner. I thought it was cool that it told us instead of us having to occasional check the main menu all the time (because I can’t recall the Wii U ever doing that). I assume there will be certain achievements and unlocks for the console, which will be cool.

  1. I’m a dude with fairly large hands and I think the JoyCons are perfectly. I love the Japanese miniaturization of everything and these feel so cool and snappy. The button presses and triggers are just the right amount of snappiness too!

I’m looking forward to Nintendo making the homescreen customizable and dare I say, “cute.” I adored my 3DS home screen and it was so neat opening it up to have music from my favorite games start playing!

Glad you’re enjoying the Switch πŸ™‚

    • I find it amazing that no one finds the controls to be “too small.” Because they really look like they’re not a “one-size fits all.” But Nintendo definitely had the right idea.
Me too. I have a collection of themes on my 3DS and have it set to random so I never know what I’m going to get. I hope the Switch does something similar.

      • I’m sure they will introduce a similar theme system, it was just too cool to not include something like it. I don’t know of any other systems that had that sort of thing, with music and themed sound affects and all that!

  2. Again, so happy that you finally have the Switch! So excited that you were able to get it! And you got the bundle too, so it looks like you’re already building a nice collection. πŸ™‚ Unfortunately, there are no achievements for Switch at the moment, but I suppose they can change that. Either way, the games are pretty fun to play so far, and I just read that you were enjoying Breath of the Wild a lot, which is great! Hope you continue to enjoy your brand new system!

By the way, feel free to add me! πŸ™‚ Here’s my Friend Code: SW-3611-4684-6706

    • Yeah, the system’s great. I still wish it were cheaper, but I do understand why it’s so expensive now. The technology is incredible.
I’ll get your my friend code soon… I don’t know it at the top of my head, lol.
