We’re in the final home stretch for E3 2017. You heard our thoughts on Nintendo’s Spotlight, and you’ll be hearing our thoughts on everything else later.
But I wanted to talk a little bit more about what Nintendo is doing… And what they’re not doing.
As you all know, I wanted a third Luigi’s Mansion game along with a new Animal Crossing. It wasn’t a prediction, it was just a wishlist. Still, I wasn’t getting my hopes up for either one of them. I figured if one was going to get announced, it would be Animal Crossing.
With the Switch still new and so much hype about it, everyone wants Animal Crossing on the Switch. But the more I think about it, the more I wonder how I’ll like it on the Switch.
Animal Crossing originally came out for the Gamecube in 2002. I fell in love with the game and even 100% paid off my debt. I didn’t collect everything by any means, but I did “beat” the game. And there was Fang. I love Fang.
Animal Crossing: Wild World came out for the Nintendo DS in 2005 and, for some reason, I didn’t get as into it as I did for the original game.
When Animal Crossing: City Folk came out for the Nintendo Wii in 2008, I felt the same way. Though I think what did it for me was that I wasn’t a huge fan of the motion controls.
Then Animal Crossing: New Leaf came out for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013. And I fell in love all over again.
I loved the first game, didn’t care too much for Wild World because I wasn’t a fan of it being on the handheld. Then City Folk came out and I realized it was better on the handheld. With New Leaf, I love it as it is.
With that said, I’m not sure how I would feel about a new Animal Crossing on the Switch. It’d be nice to see it on the big screen, but I do like to carry it around with me. Good thing the Switch is portable, but still, I don’t know how it would all work.
Then there’s the game itself. What else can they do to Animal Crossing? They added so much to New Leaf to make it “new and improved” from the other games. You’re the mayor, can update your town, you have your own private island, and you can go deep sea diving. So, what else is there for an Animal Crossing game?
It’s like the Paper Mario games. They had something good, felt the need to improve, and those changes haven’t been great.
They keep trying to change Pokemon and add new things after 20 years. I enjoyed the changes in Sun and Moon, but I don’t know what to expect from Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Then again, Pokemon is a different topic for a different day.
And yes, I know I’m speculating on games that we’re even talked about. But Animal Crossing is so popular that I do believe there will be another game at some point in the future, even if it’s five years away. And it makes me wonder if Nintendo is already thinking about it, but just don’t have enough to say anything yet, similar to them just simply confirming a core RPG Pokemon game for the Switch.
With all that said, I am happy with what Nintendo announced the other day. I think the games up and coming this year are great and I’m looking forward to them. However, since they didn’t talk about much, I can’t help but wonder what else they have up their sleeve.
Still, I’m not getting my hopes up. But I’m still curious. I’d love to be a fly on the wall at Nintendo Headquarters.
Lots of speculation here, but do you think they have more planned than what they let on? Let me know in the comments below!
