First Thoughts: Oceanhorn Nintendo Switch Demo

I feel like with the Nintendo Switch, I’ve been widening my gameplay. I’m playing games I normally wouldn’t and trying games I wouldn’t bother thinking twice about.

When I saw a free demo of Oceanhorn, I thought, why not?

The free demo of Oceanhorn came out on October 12. I downloaded it on October 13 and at that point, it was already available to buy. I had decided to continue on with the demo regardless just in case. The game looked charming, similar to The Legend of Zelda, but you still never know.

At least if I enjoyed the demo, I had the option to buy it right away and continue playing.

The game started off with an introduction and a little bit of backstory. Your father was leaving to defeat the Oceanhorn monster. And he, of course, never returns. He leaves you with your mother’s necklace and tells you to keep it safe.

Sometime later – could be years, could be months – the necklace awakens and calls you. You retrieve it, find your father’s sword and shield, and then the old man in the village tells you your destiny is to go after your father and save everyone.

Just as your true adventure is about to get started, the demo ends. It took me about 20 minutes total to do.

I explored the island, listened to a couple of cutscenes, and learned the basics of the game and the controls. Just how a demo should be.

Still, I was hoping it’d be a little longer. The graphics were charming, the music was good, and the overall story and the setting around it are intriguing.

I honestly wasn’t expecting myself to buy the game right away since there are so many other games Kris and I are trying to get through right now. However, I think I’ll be getting it sooner rather than later.

  1. Oceanhorn is ok. I did a review around the release for Switch. It’s got a cool style, but there are moments where the controls end up a bit clunky, most notably in some boss fights. Make things harder than it should be. In terms of puzzle solving it doesn’t do much to stand out. I did like navigating through the dungeons though, that was cool.

    I think the series has potential. I’d love to see what they do for the sequel, as they are apparently in works of one.

    • I’ve noticed that with the puzzles. I ended up buying the game sooner than I thought I would and I haven’t made it to a dungeon yet. I just assumed the puzzles were simple because it was the beginning of the game.
