Throwback Thursday: Old School Pokemon Board Books

Happy Thursday!

A couple of weeks ago, I was cleaning out the garage with my dad. There were quite a few bins filled with old children’s books from when my sisters and I were younger. I opened one up to see if the books would be good enough for my nephew and I came across a book that I couldn’t part with.

Pokemon Tales

Pokemon Tales was a series of small board books. They were quick and easy reads for kids about, of course, Pokemon. I had a couple of them, but certainly not all of them.

Of course, now that I remember they exist, I want to try to get all the books again.

There are a ton of them, but I only had a handful of the books. However, I only found one of them in the garage. I don’t know if the others are hidden in there somewhere or if they were donated somehow long ago. Still, I brought the one book inside the house and it’s on my bookshelf now.

Come Out, Squirtlewas the second book in the Pokemon Tales books. It was about Squirtle hiding in his shell all day long because he thought the world was scary. Charmander and another Pokemon (I can’t remember who) try to get him to come out and reassure him that everything is going to be okay.

I remember it started to rain and Charmander and the other Pokemon run for shelter and Squirtle was just like, “See? Good thing I’m in my shell!” When the rain stops, they come back and try again to get Squirtle to come out. It’s not until they see something cool that coaxes Squirtle out. They see a rainbow and Squirtle is happy he came out of his shell.

It’s simple and cute and I remember resonating with the story a lot because I was afraid of my shadow. I still am at times.

I wish I was able to find the other ones I had. I also had Pikachu’s DayLapras Makes a FriendWhere’s Clefairy’s Voice?Meet Mew, and I’m Not Pikachu! I may have had a couple more, but those are the ones I remember the most.

I remember bringing Pikachu’s Day to my first-grade class and my teacher read it aloud to the class. That’s probably the only thing I remember from first-grade.

I Googled the books because I couldn’t remember all the titles. There were a lot more than I thought and they also had books based on the Johto Pokemon, which I didn’t even know existed. Now I want to get them more than ever.

Still, it’s nice to take a trip down memory lane.

Do you remember these books? Did you have any of these as a kid? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I DID have these books! I was way too old to be reading these when they came out, but the artwork was incredibly cute, and I liked collecting them anyway. Same goes for the old paperback chapter books based on the anime. Pokemon really did make me read more when I was younger haha. Thanks for this blast from the past! 🙂
