Ready Player One Trailer

Double Jump Kris MiiHappy Monday! What are you most looking forward to next year?

Can you believe that Christmas is in a week? I’m not sure if I’m ready! I hope everyone else is enjoying the holidays!

A long time ago on this blog, I did a book review for Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One. I had heard the rumors when they first popped up about a movie being made based off of the book and it seemed interesting.

The book itself is about a race against time and corrupt organizations for control of the major MMO world called the OASIS. The creator of the OASIS passed away and left behind Easter Eggs and puzzles. Whoever solved the puzzles controlled the OASIS. Considering that the OASIS was considered the real world to many — an escape from a bleak reality — the economic benefits of controlling the world was incredible.

The trailer doesn’t look bad… But nothing quite stands out to me. We’ve seen amazing scenes done with special effects in plenty of sci-fi and fantasy movies nowadays, and with virtual reality actually being a, well, reality, the idea of the setting doesn’t seem as fantastic. I mean, there is no virtual reality quite like the OASIS in our world — not yet — so it’ll be interesting to see how the OASIS is brought to life, but I’m much more interested in how the movie will portray the characters and the plot.

The plot itself is fairly standard. You can guess how the ending will go. When I was reading the book, the plot was interesting enough to keep reading, but I was generally reading for the characters and their reactions to the corrupt government and how they were trying to save both the real and the virtual world. The trailers show off Wade, the main character, rightly so, but it also focused more on the potential of OASIS rather than the characters. Trailers are teasers, of course, so they’re trying to catch your eye with whatever they believe is fantastic enough to do so, but I hope the movie itself will do the characters justice.

You see Wade, you see who might be Art3mis, you see who is probably the bad guy… I want to see Aech. I want to see more of James Halliday and his influence on this world. Yes, I would love to see more of OASIS, but I certainly hope that the movie will not focus so much on the scenery and special effects that it forgets the story of the characters.

Ready Player One comes out early next year. We’ll see how it turns out.

Have you read Ready Player One? What do you think of the trailer?
