Original or Definitive Edition

Double Jump Kris MiiThe Nintendo Switch has been wildly successful in its year and a half out in the world. We are definitely impressed with ours, enjoying both the games and the multiple ways we can play.

Speaking of the games, though, many games have been ported to the Switch from the Wii U. The latest to get the treatment is Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition. Do you think the Definitive Edition is worth it?

I’ve been seeing Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition for the Switch all over the place considering the game just came out this past Friday. The original Hyrule Warriors came out about four years ago for the Wii U and, considering all of the improved Wii U ports the Switch has been getting during this past year, it’s not too surprising that Hyrule Warriors got the same Switch treatment.

I enjoyed Fire Emblem Warriors when it came out for the Switch and I liked Hyrule Warriors for the Wii U. I’ve been on the fence about getting HW: Definitive Edition, however. I have both the Wii U and the 3DS version of the game already, so I’m not certain if I want to drop another sixty bucks for the Definitive Edition.

On one hand, I understand that the Definitive Edition includes the downloadable content that the standard, if you will, editions had. With that said, I hadn’t paid much attention to what the DLC for Hyrule Warriors had been. Does the extra content make the Definitive Edition worth it? How much have I missed when it comes to the DLC for Hyrule Warriors?

When it came to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it wasn’t a difficult decision to buy the Switch version despite us having the Wii U edition of the game. We knew what the DLC was and figured it was worth it for the Switch version. At that time, we were eager to get games for the new console anyway, and a Mario Kart game seemed like a no-brainer. However, I don’t feel the same way when it comes to HW: Definitive Edition.

On the other hand, I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Definitive Edition of the game from reviews and first impressions I’ve seen around, despite it only being out for a few days. Will the port be better than the Wii U original? Again? That brings up the bigger questions as to why so many Wii U games are being ported to the Switch and why they are so much more successful than when they were on the Wii U.

The simpler question for today, though, is do I splurge and get the Definitive Edition of Hyrule Warriors?

  1. I never played the original or Legends, so I’m not sure which parts of the Definitive Edition are DLC and which ones were part of which game. I’m enjoying the game a lot so far, but that’s as someone who didn’t own a Wii U, so this is my first experience with the game. If you’ve already played both Warriors and Legends, though, I feel like the only appeal of this version would be having the content of both games on one system.
