As many of you may know, we enjoy following Rosanna Pansino’s Nerdy Nummies YouTube Channel. For fun, we went all the way to the beginning of her channel to see the stark differences between her latest videos and her very first upload, and it’s a bit of a trip to watch. The host’s first upload was (seven) years ago, without all the production lights and camera crews, and it was fun to watch her demonstrate how to bake a Super Mario star cake.
And cake is delicious, so we thought why not make one that pays homage to one of Nintendo’s most famous franchises?
We semi-cheated and went the boxed cake mix route rather than baking from scratch, mostly due to timing and schedule issues… And we wanted funfetti cake.
With the help of our star-shaped pan from Wiltons (#NotSponsored #CouldBeSponsored #SponsorUs), we got our funfetti cake all baked and let the cake cool off completely before frosting it with our bright yellow-dyed frosting. The eyes were made with some of the cookie icing that we had left over from decorating our Pokemon cookies. We let the cake chill a little bit longer to let the frosting and icing set before digging in.
We screwed up a bit on the frosting, finding that the black icing we were trying to do for the eyes had softened a little too much from the heat we’ve been having lately. The black icing started to run, so we tried to correct it with a little more yellow frosting. It didn’t work out quite as planned, so we left it at that, haha!
At least it still looks like a star and, most importantly, it was delicious!
