Top Tuesday: Favorite Nintendo Controllers

Rachel Mii | DoubleJump.com Happy Tuesday and September!

I don’t know what made me think of this the other day, but controllers are such a big part of playing games and I decided to talk about my favorite controllers from Nintendo consoles.

3. Nintendo 64 Controller

There’s always some sort of debate on how to hold this controller. I’ll admit, I always held onto the middle and right side because my hands were too small otherwise. In fact, they were pretty small no matter how I held the controller. So, why is this one on my favorites list? Because it’s unique and cool looking. That’s pretty much all there is to it.

2. Gamecube Controller

It’s not a classic controller, no, but whenever I think of a “game controller” the Gamecube one pops into my head. This one has always been the most comfortable and Kris and I used to have certain ones that had grips where you held it. So I always liked that.

1. Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con

I feel like not many people will agree with me on this one. I was skeptical of the Joy-Con at first for sure. They certainly don’t look like a “game controller.” However, I love the ability to have one or two united. I also love being able to do other things with my hands while I play. I can sit with my arms crossed and play whatever game. But the biggest reason this is number one for me is because they’re small. I have baby hands and the Joy-Con fit me perfectly. It’s so comfortable. Anything to help me play games easier is a win for me.

  1. Got to say that nothing has ever compared to the N64. I think a special mention does need to go to the Wiimote and Nunchuk. The motion control idea was amazing and worked well, plus it did not appear at first how you could comfortably control games but somehow you could. Joycons only really work for me when attached to the screen or in the controller holster, don’t like them on their own, too small even for my child like hands!

    • The Wiimote was great too, I agree. The tech was good and they were comfortable. I especially loved having them in the wheel for Mario Kart Wii. Still, thinking of my top three, N64, Gamecube, and the Switch come to mind. The Joy-Con are perfect for my hands, lol.

  2. My answer may have modern technology and recency bias on its side, but I adore the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. It’s a great controller in the style of modern controllers, while having impeccable battery life. PS4 controllers seem to die in under a week, while the Pro Controller lasts for ages. I know it’s an extra purchase, but once I got it, I can’t go back to Joy-Cons in the grip when playing docked.

    • I have yet to try the Pro Controller. Kris used it at a friend’s house the other day but I ended up taking the Joy-Con because that’s what I prefer. The Pro Controller was always sold out when we looked for it and at this point we’re in rush to get it, lol.
