Bad Games That Are So Good

We all have our favorite games – ones that we can play over and over again. Ones that we know like the back of our hand. Then there are games that we never finish. Games that we can’t stand. There’s another category of games – games we love to hate. Guilty pleasure games. Games that we know are bad, but we play them anyway in all their frustrating glory.

Plenty of these games are older, games that we’ve returned to because we remember them as if they were good, but getting older made us wiser. One such game that is notoriously bad that we’ve always enjoyed is Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for the GameCube. The music and Chao Garden were perhaps the best aspects of the game. Otherwise, the controls, gameplay mechanics, and a bit of a ridiculous story all made this game infamous.

We always had fun with Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. We used to play co-op all the time and versus each other. However, aside from that and the Chao Garden, going back to the game isn’t as fun as we remember it. Another game that we love that’s also just as bad is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the Gamecube. We had a lot of fun with that one but the lackluster levels and repetitive catchphrases is enough to make us cringe.

We had enough fun to even get the sequels, though, haha! And the best part of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was meeting some great friends and pushing us into the streaming world. Another game that we enjoyed for some reason was Mario Party 4, also for the GameCube. Rachel and I had some awesome times teaming up against computer characters, and some of our favorite two-versus-two mini games are on that installment. However, playing it fairly recently definitely didn’t feel as fun as years ago. What examples are there that are not from the GameCube?

Mario Party 4 was a letdown recently, yet… even on the hardest difficulty the CPUs were too easy. The boards and games weren’t as fun as I remembered either. We are listing a lot of Gamecube games, huh? Which happens to be one of my favorite consoles, ironically.

The GameCube is probably one of the defining eras of video game history, considering our ages. Sony and Microsoft consoles weren’t in our home, and the Nintendo 64 and SNES were great, but the majority of our video game library is GameCube games. With our ages, it’s no wonder that we have most of our memories of the GameCube, both the good and the bad.

  1. Mario Kart 64 is awful to control, it has unbalanced item drops, the character sprites look awful, and several of the tracks are poorly designed…but dang it, I would drop almost anything that I’m doing to jump in and race against someone! And don’t get me started on the wonderful chaos that is Battle Mode…

  2. TMNT just waited over a decade to flex its muscles and cosmic forces before it paid off. At this point, I don’t see how it’s not the best game. πŸ˜›

  3. I can’t say I have a game that comes to mind. But I can relate to your disappointment regarding Mario Party 4. Out of the first 7 entries in the saga, it is the only one I would qualify as bad.
