Pokemon Sword & Pokemon Shield

The Pokemon Direct on Wednesday morning was only about 7 minutes long, but we have yet to see too many complaints about it. All things considered, I was pleased with what I saw of the Generation 8 Pokemon games. Pretty sure one of my favorite parts of it was the reveal that gyms would be returning!

rachmii
I have to admit, I was expecting generation eight reveals, but I was also thinking there would be other announcements. I’m certainly not complaining though! What they showed off of the Galar Region was amazing. The world looks beautiful and yes, I’m eager to collect badges again.

krismii
The graphics definitely look gorgeous on the Switch, and the world itself looks so much more detailed than the Let’s Go titles. The character designs look fun — I was really amused at how large the male character’s backpack was! The starters themselves look cute. I’ll definitely be going with Grookey, since I usually go for the Grass-type starters anyway. Sobble looks adorable, though!

rachmii
All the main starters are adorable. I’m excited to have a bunny as the fire-type! I’m super curious as to what they’re final evolution and typing will be. I’m also looking forward to finding out more information about the legendary Pokemon. For the titles Sword and Shield, I don’t know what they’ll do. I have a feeling they’ll be wolf-like though, of course.

krismii
Think the Scorbunny will end up being Fire and Fighting type? One of the things that Alola had in its favor was the secondary typing of the starters’ final evolutions. Ghost, Dark, and Fairy were great, but it would be interesting to have other, unique secondary types for the starters. The titles Sword and Shield are awesome and I’m hoping they have a fun story and plotline to go along with them. I’m totally up for canine-like legendaries!

Rachel Mii Double Jump
I don’t know, I feel like they’ve had so many Fire/Fighting Pokemon, especially for the starters. For some reason, Scorbunny looks like it could be Fire/Electric. Grookey maybe Grass/Ground and Sobble Water/Bug. I honestly would love to see opposite types together. I know it won’t happen with Sword & Shield (if at all) but I think it’d be cool to have starters that are Fire/Water, Water/Grass, Grass/Fire. But now I’m rambling – anyway, canine legendaries would be awesome. I wonder if it’ll be two versions of a similar Pokemon (kind of like Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres) or if they’ll somehow be different (like Solgaleo and Lunala). But both looked like they were wolves or something.

krismii
Oh, I know, I’m joking. I’m convinced that Incineroar, with its design, was originally going to be Fire/Fighting, but so many people were sick of that typing that they changed it to Fire/Dark. Ground is starting to be a bit overused with the Grass starters, but there’s not many Water/Bug types. Going back to Sword and Shield, I wonder if the legendary Pokemon and the story itself will have some sort of medieval angle. I think the logos of the games remind me of crests from royal families or knights. Generation 5’s story played with a royal family angle, didn’t it?

Rachel Mii Double Jump
Ground is starting to get overused with Grass, I agree. But Grookey’s coloring reminds me of Grass/Ground. Grass/Rock would be cool too. A medieval angle would be cool. I mean, the story will more or less be the same as all the other Pokemon games, I think. I was surprised to see the Galar map. It’s long and seems like the journey will be fairly linear. Which isn’t a bad thing, but it’s definitely different than before.

krismii
Grass/Rock would be interesting. I miss the Grass/Poison typing that Venusaur has, admittedly. Yes, I’m sure the story will involve some team or other trying to take over or change the world while using Pokemon, and the fate of the world will rest on the shoulders of our pre-teen protagonist. Still, I hope the lore of the region is well done. If the lore is well done enough, I would absolutely love it if the region got a third game. I wasn’t thrilled with the “sequels” of Black 2/White 2 and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon — we should have gotten a Gray and Eclipse for those regions, respectively. We also totally missed out on another game for the Kalos region. There should have been a Pokemon Z for Zygarde. I suppose those are a bit of a ways off, though. For now, I’m definitely looking forward to Sword and Shield.

Rachel Mii Double Jump
I totally agree. We should have had third installments for Unova, Kalos, and Alola. I understand they want to make more money, but I think they have plenty and the third volumes are what people seem to really enjoy. Here’s hoping to Pokemon Armor when the time comes! In the meantime, I can’t wait for Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield… late 2019 most likely means November. It’ll be here before we know it.

  1. I thought Sword and Shield looked great! Love the graphical improvements, such as the increased detail and the dynamic camera that seems to give the world a “Breath of the Wild” look, even if you can’t actually control it. Wish it didn’t have random battles, but I’ll live.

#teamsobble for me. I tend to lean towards water starters, and its outlook on life matches my own.

Always impressed to see you flex your deep memorization of Pokemon typing. I can’t for the life of me keep it straight, even with Let’s Go only having 1 gen. With presumably 8 generations of Pokemon incoming, this is going to be an even more glaring weakness of mine when we inevitably fight in the Galar Region!

    • I miss the idea of seeing the wild Pokemon roam like the Let’s Go titles did as well, but I guess something had to give with the amount of detail we saw in the region. I’m just really excited for gyms again, haha!

I’m wondering if we’re going to get any new typing with Generation 8? Not sure what else we could have, but it’s always interesting to see how a new type worms its way into the match-up charts and all. I’m still iffy on my Fairy-type knowledge from Kalos. Definitely looking forward to battling you again!

Also, I’m kind of geeking out that you tend to lean toward Water starters. Rachel picks Fire, and my preferred starter is the Grass type. Triple Jump indeed. xD

    • Right? It looks awesome! I don’t mind the random encounters: 1, I think I’m too used to them. 2, I don’t mind the surprise. Though I do agree that, after seeing them roam around in Let’s Go, I was kind of hoping they’d do the same for this. But that’s probably a lot of programming to do for over 800 Pokemon… I wonder if we’ll hit 1,000 Pokemon now?! I have a lot of collecting to do!

Sobble is adorable, they all are. I’ll be getting Scorbunny though. I always go with the fire types.

I can’t wait to kick your butt.

  2. Loved the look of the starters and the world looks beautiful. Pokemon Go got me back into Pokemon and I loved playing Pokemon Sun. I would like to see some of the older pokemon evolve again to breath new life into them, maybe a tauros or lapras evolution/devolution. Also would be good to have special versios of pokemon from that region, I really like that there were Alola versions of some pokemon.

    • Glad you’re back into the Pokemon franchise! The looks of the Galar region are a great reason to come back — the world definitely looks beautiful and I can’t wait to explore it!

An addition to the Lapras line would be awesome, and it would be interesting to see if any changes to Pokemon lines in the previous generations will be made. Speaking of Tauros, have you seen Bouffalant from Gen 5 (as I’m not sure if you’ve stopped playing the games before Unova or not)? I thought for sure that it would be part of the Tauros line — and maybe it originally was going to be — but it’s a standalone Pokemon as well. I’m mainly looking forward to see what brand new Pokemon were cooked up by Nintendo for Galar!

    • That’s a cool idea. I’d love to have a Pokemon like Lapras de-evolve or have a different form. I wonder just what they’ll do though… they’ve always added new evolutions, new forms, new types, mega evolution, Z-moves… I wonder what the big change will be this time. I hope we get a new Eevee evolution at least.

      Liked by 1 person

      • All that would be amazing. I hope their plan is to have Eevee become every single type at some point, lol. Someone posted “Guardeon” a steel-type Eeveelution for Sword and Shield. It was a really cool design! Kris found it on the Internet somewhere… most likely Tumblr, but I can’t remember.

  3. I’m super excited for this. After the disappointment that was Let’s Go I need to play a good Pokemon game on my Switch. I’m currently playing Ultra Sun while I wait :). The three starters look good to me. I rarely like all 3 starters in a Pokemon game and I like all of these. The game is beautiful and I’m pretty sure that bunny is going to be fire/fighting. I mean… look at the bandage on the nose. That’s a dead giveaway to me lol.

The grass starter I have no idea. I loved Rowlet’s grass/flying and eventually grass/ghost typing. Going from something that unique to… another grass/ground would be disappointing to say the least, but Grookey is adorable and will most likely be my starter. If not him then my fire bunny! I’ve never been a big fan of water type starters so the water type is in last place for now.

I can’t wait for this game!

    • I’m sorry to hear that you were disappointed by Let’s Go. Those titles had a lot of nostalgia for me, but there were aspects of the game that I disliked as well. Still, they’re enjoyable for me and, honestly, I’d probably pick Let’s Go over the Alola games. I wasn’t as invested in Alola as I would have hoped, but I do love the Pokemon from that generation.

We did notice the bandage on the fire-type’s nose, but it would still be great to see a new typing combination, lol. I did see some speculation on Tumblr about how the starters would represent King Arthur-like lore, and the final typings of the starters would be Fire/Steel (for a knight), Water/Dragon (for… well, dragons), and Grass/Fairy (for a monk, I think the reasoning was). I wouldn’t mind any of those, as I believe they’d be unique for the starters.

I’ll be with you on selecting Grookey as my first choice! Grass types are my go-to starters, and water tends to be second place. 🙂

      • Let’s Go was the opposite with me. I’m tired of Kanto and want nothing to do with that region anymore. I would have preferred a more interesting location and the dumbed down mechanics bothered me too. Too much was taken out and too little was added for me to get much enjoyment out of Let’s Go. Let’s Go is currently my least favorite Pokemon game of all time while Sun/Moon is in third place on my favorites list :).

I agree that a new typing would be neat, but I’m not totally against another fire/fighting because we haven’t had one since Black/White and that was a long time ago. I’m happy regardless of what type the bunny is because I’ll finally be playing the Pokemon game I wanted on the Switch :).

Oh, and it’s totally cool that you like Let’s Go. I’m not trying to make you feel like you shouldn’t or that it’s a terrible game because honestly I don’t think it is a terrible game at all :). It just really disappointed me lol.

      • Haha, to each their own! Let’s Go definitely catered to the newer and more casual Pokemon fans, so those of us who’ve played every installment probably didn’t find anything totally special about it. While I personally was charmed by the duo titles, I completely understand that they weren’t for everyone.

In regards to the typings of the starter Pokemon, the Fire starters tend to be my third choice and, honestly, I’ll like whatever they decide to do for the evolutionary lines. Yet, while we haven’t had a Fire/Fighting since Black/White, if they make this generation a Fire/Fighting, that’d be half of the Fire starters. I just feel like Nintendo is missing out on so many other opportunities to show off unique typings when they have so many types available to them.

    • Eh, that’s a good point… but I kind of hope it’s not Fire/Fighting. We’ve had so many of those. I want something different, two out-of-the-box types together.

Then again, I’m not going to complain about anything. We’re getting a new Pokemon game with brand new Pokemon. That’s all I care about, lol.

      • To be fair we haven’t had a fire/fighting starter since Black/White so it’s been awhile. I haven’t trained a fire/fighting since before that. I’m not totally against the idea, but I would love something a little more unique. The bandage just screams fire/fighting to me though :).

And I’m with you there. I’m not complaining about anything. The Pokemon game I want is finally coming to the Switch!

      • It has been a while, but we had a fire/fighting starter for Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova. So if Scorbunny is fire/fighting, that’s half the fire starters for the whole series that’s fire/fighting. Definitely a cool type match up, but I would love to see a match up that hasn’t been used yet at all. Then again, I’m still choosing Scorbunny as my starter no matter what. 😉

  4. This was a great read!

I’ve been waiting for another brilliant Pokemon game.

For me, Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield is spectacular.

I like how they made it more lively.

    The new starters is ok.

It has been my tradition to always go with water starters.

However, I am quite unsure this time because I kinda find all the Pokemons in this game somewhat charming.

    • Thanks for the kind words! It’s been interesting hearing about what starters most people seem to be going with. Fire types tend to be the favorites, but I think I’ve been hearing more people planning on choosing Sobble. While I usually go with the Grass type, having three games per generation always helped me be able to choose a different starter for each game, haha! I suppose with the Nintendo Switch being able to have more accounts and, thus, “save files” for games, it won’t be much of a problem, but I always liked the idea of having multiple save slots on a Pokemon game.

    • Overall, I think Pokemon Sword and Shield are going to be well-rounded and just great. I didn’t see anything in the trailer that made me stop and think about something. I liked every bit of it.
