First Thoughts On Some New Pokemon For Pokemon Sword & Shield

Rachel Mii | DoubleJump.comHappy Tuesday!

I was a little late to the party, but I noticed some new Pokemon for Sword and Shield were flittering around the Internet the other day. All pictures of the Pokemon were taken from Serebii.net, which has more information on the Pokemon.

Yamper

Yamper | First Thoughts on New Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield | Video Games | Nintendo | Pokemon | Nintendo Switch | DoublexJump.comI’m pleased to see there’s another puppy Pokemon through into the ever-growing Pokedex. The puppy Pokemon have always been adorable and they’ve done a nice job making sure the puppy Pokemon are various types. We’ve got fire, dark, normal, and now electric. (Though I guess you can say we technically already had that, but whatever.)

Yamper is an electrically charged pup who doesn’t know what to do with all its electricity, so he runs around rampant and is constantly energized. I find that utterly adorable and I can’t want to see this Pokemon in action both in the game and in the anime.

I always try to get an electric type Pokemon on my team the first time I play and Yamper will definitely be one I catch. I’m looking forward to seeing what its evolutions will be – assuming he has them, but I think he’ll have one or two.

Alcremie

Alcremie | First Thoughts on New Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield | Video Games | Nintendo | Pokemon | Nintendo Switch | DoublexJump.comThe cream Pokemon, Alcremie. Before I knew anything about it, not even its name, I immediately thought of strawberry shortcake. I assume that’s where the designer was going with this design. I think this Pokemon is absolutely adorable and, it being a fairy type, I know it’s going to be obnoxiously strong. I was iffy on fairy types when they were first introduced but the type has grown on me and I’m eager to see what Alcremie will be able to do.

I remember past “food” Pokemon were crapped on because no one liked Pokemon being made from inanimate objects – even though some of those Pokemon were absolutely the best. Everyone seems to adore Alcremie though, so… I guess we won’t hear complaints about that, huh? At least, not about this particular Pokemon.

Rolycoly

Rolycoly | First Thoughts on New Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield | Video Games | Nintendo | Pokemon | Nintendo Switch | DoublexJump.comOur new rock type is known as the coal Pokemon, Rolycoly. It reminds me of Roggenrola and I’m pleased to see one of its abilities is not sturdy. (Because, really, sturdy is only a good ability if the Pokemon is on your side.) He looks like a puff cloud though only… not fluffy. I feel like he would be able to float and hover around, though the Pokedex says it rolls around with ease.

Coal drops from Rolycoly’s body and people in the Galar region use it to heat up their homes. I always enjoy it when a Pokemon has an every-day function like that in addition to their battling. I wonder if he’ll get the chance to learn any fire moves?

Duraludon

Duraludon | First Thoughts on New Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield | Video Games | Nintendo | Pokemon | Nintendo Switch | DoublexJump.comThe alloy Pokemon, a steel and dragon type – Duraludon. This guy, even though he only weighs about 88-lbs, is going to be a beast. Although, according to his Pokedex entry, he seems as though he’s a gentle soul (despite battling with Tyranitar a lot). I love the look of him though. He’s so shiny and his arms, which is used to crush rock, are a cool design. I’m eager to see this guy in battle… on my side, of course.

  1. I’d hoped that one of the starters was the hyperactive corgi, but still.

While most of the fire-breathing backlash against this game from people on the internet is going too far, I still think Pokemon is an example of a game franchise that hasn’t handled the move to 3D very well. Its art style doesn’t really need it to work (quite the opposite) and Game Freak has stumbled with optimization.
