For this month, I decided to give some attention to a minor character who has finally gotten their chance in a spotlight in a popular game.
Piranha Plant is a common enemy in the Mario franchise. Based off the Venus Flytraps in real, Piranha Plants are plants that will eat anything that comes near it, sometimes being able to spit fire.
This guy made his first appearance in Super Mario Bros. for the NES in 1985. Piranha Plants were traps laid by Bowser to slow Mario down from saving Princess Toadstool. Most often than not, they can been seen poking their heads in and out of pipes. However, in later games such as Super Mario 64, they’re planted in the ground unable to move. In Paper Mario, though, they’re able to move about the ground popping out like moles as they chase and attempt to catch Mario. As you can see, they’ve seemed to evolve over the years.
Piranha Plant has never been anything more than a common enemy in the Mario series. Petey Piranha is its own character, however, Piranha Plants in general have never gotten much of the spotlight. Common enemies such as Goombas, Boos, and Bom-ombs have also occurred in one way or another – Mario takes on these types of characters as partners in Paper Mario, King Bom-omb is a well known enemy as is King Boo.
Now Piranha Plant finally has a chance in the spotlight and can fight back as his own fighter in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. When Nintendo first announced Piranha Plant as a player fighter, I was confused and had my doubts at first. The more I thought about it, though, the more I really liked the idea. Piranha Plant doesn’t get talked about much and he does have a lot of skills despite being stuck inside a pot.
Good job, Piranha Plant. You finally have been able to show people what you’re made of!
