About a week ago, Nintendo presented a Star Fox Direct for the newest game in that franchise’s line. Being released on June 25, 2026, Star Fox for the Nintendo Switch 2 appears to be a completely remastered version of Star Fox 64.

And it looks GOOD.

Fox McCloud made his cinematic debut in the Super Mario Galaxy movie which, at the timing of this post, I have yet to see. Nintendo themselves had spoiled Fox’s appearance in the movie via social media, so seeing his presumably intro scene from the movie in the direct wasn’t much of a surprise. Likewise, hearing the announcement of a new Star Fox game following Fox’s appearance in the movie also wasn’t a surprise.

Nintendo did the same thing with Donkey Kong and the first Super Mario movie, after all.

My main experience with Star Fox is, honestly, the Super Smash Bros. franchise and Star Fox Adventures for the GameCube which, incidentally, we decided to try because of Fox’s appearance in Super Smash Bros. Neither are typical Star Fox games, of course. The only opportunity we’ve had to try the games were on the Super Nintendo mini and… they were okay. They weren’t truly up our alley, genre-wise, but we enjoyed the characters from the games we knew them from.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Star Fox actually looks like a game I wouldn’t mind picking up.

I’ve been impressed so far with the graphic capabilities of the Switch 2, and Star Fox looks like no exception. The updated graphics for the characters look great, and the direct made me eager to learn more about the characters themselves. The voice acting sounded wonderfully done, and I’m a sucker for a game with decent cutscenes and, hopefully, a good story. Star Fox seems like it will have some nice replayability as well, which is always a plus in my book.

(…Despite how difficult it can be to find the time to do one playthrough of a game nowadays, but I digress.)

While I was never truly into the shooter genre or Star Fox’s games before, Star Fox for the Switch 2 may be one that I will pick up to give it a go.

What did you think of the Star Fox Direct?
