Friday Favorites: Villains

Double Jump Kris MiiOh my goodness, it’s almost Christmas!
Despite the awesome feel-good, jolly, everything-is-wonderful kind of emotions that run rampant during this time of the year, let’s talk about some of our favorite video game villains. You know, those people that you love to hate (or hate to love).
Team Skull
Okay, so I’m not done with the story in Pokemon Moon, but so far the antagonistic team seems awesome. These dorks are hysterical, and I can’t wait to keep going to see what sort of antics they get up to!
Manfred von Karma
This dude was ridiculous. His cold attitude towards his adopted son, towards his victims, was horrible and his aim for perfection made me want to sock him across the jaw. The pressure he put on his children did not put him on my good list, but he was a shoe-in for a favorite villain.
Although the Legend of Zelda series has a plethora of amazing characters, heroes and villains alike, Ganondorf was always intriguing. Unlike Link and Zelda, who are reincarnated in almost every game, there has been evidence that Ganondorf is one man forever looping in time for his quest for power. You have to admire his ambition and determination!
The main villain behind all the catastrophe that had robbed the world of wishes in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Smithy was a machine-loving robot fanatic. You heard all about him throughout the entire adventure until you finally come face-to-face with him in the final two-part battle. The build-up to the scene and Smithy’s complete apathy to the heroes trying to talk him out of overrunning the world with machines really makes you dive into the fight with gusto to save the world. That, and the music during his battle is fantastic!
What are some of your favorite video game villains?

  1. My not only favorite video game villain, but favorite character of all time is Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII. I wrote a defense of him that was over a decade in the making and am more than in love with the tragedy and complexity of his character. I could gush about this for days (and have. My husband is very tolerant hehe), but he’s a huge reason why Final Fantasy VII is my favorite game and also story of all time ♥♥♥
I think Ganondorf is phenomenal, too, and I love how the series expanded on him and his history. The Gerudo (sp?) are fascinating, and they did such a wonderful job of tying that together.

    1. So glad you have a tolerant husband, haha! I started playing the original FFVII a long time ago, but I don’t remember getting too far…. If the remake is on a console that we have, I’ll have to give it another go.
The Gerudo, after the Sheikah, are probably one of my favorite races in the Legend of Zelda. Their lore is amazing, and their music is always one of my favorite tunes!

      1. I want to say they’ll release it for Sony PS4 first, but I’m sure it’ll cross consoles! I originally played the Eidos version on the PC before getting the original PlayStation version that I still have today!
I love the Gerudo. That music is like perfect horseback riding soundtrack. Do you pronounce it with a hard or soft G? I always do the hard G like in “guest,” though I suppose by the rules of English pronunciation it should be soft like in “genesis.”

  2. Those are great choices! Manfred von Karma is pure evil, as is Ganondorf. I do appreciate more humorous villains like Team Skull. I would also say Bowser is humorous at times, which is why I enjoy him as a villain, particularly in the RPGs where he spouts one-liners and is not meant to be taken as seriously. I also like Jessie and James from Team Rocket, even though they’re technically in the anime (and Yellow version!). There are lots of other villains in the Ace Attorney franchise that I like, but von Karma is a great representative villain.
