Growing up, we were always console players at heart, specifically Nintendo. We had the type of parents that called every video game a “Nintendo,” and learning the distinction between game companies wasn’t too important for us back then.

Nowadays, I spend many hours playing on my PC, loading up Steam to enjoy games that haven’t quite yet made their way to the mainstream consoles. I’ve developed a love of indie games and my Steam catalogue showcases that. Below are a few of my current favorite games to play on Steam.

Dragon’s Brew

Dragon’s Brew is a simulation game where one takes on the task of running a board game cafe. Rotate out board games for folks to come in and play, make sure they don’t get too worn out with multiple uses, and have plenty of drinks and snacks for customers to enjoy while they play. Decorate and expand your shop over time, and explore other stores in the world when your shop is closed.

Dragon’s Brew is still in Beta version, but it’s a pretty full game as it is now, in my opinion. Like most business and life simulations, it can be a bit addicting to keep playing just one more day to see how much of a profit you can make. I’m very much looking forward to the full version of the game, hopefully coming out sometime this year!

Fields of Mistria

Ten years ago, Stardew Valley exploded on the video game front. Since then, there have been plenty of other developers trying their hands at creating farming simulation games. One of my favorites that I have discovered is Fields of Mistra.

Like Dragon’s Brew, Fields of Mistria also isn’t fully released just yet at the time of this writing, but the sheer volume of content that is already available — from crops to events to the characters themselves — makes this game such a joy to play. The graphics are wonderful and the characters are delightful. If you like Stardew Valley and the Story of Seasons franchise, I urge you to give Fields of Mistra a try!

Baldur’s Gate 3

I’ve always enjoyed RPGs, especially for the stories and characters, but growing up the RPGs I mainly played were the Pokemon franchise and early Super Mario RPG games. Heavy fantasy and Dungeons & Dragons-like settings always intrigued me, and last year I finally took the chance on Baldur’s Gate 3.

I cannot recall the last time I was so immersed in such a large, beautiful world in a video game. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild duo is a close second to this feeling, but as wonderful as those versions of Hyrule are, they seem small compared to the setting in Baldur’s Gate 3. Throwing my favorite D&D characters in the mix just makes the game more exciting!

What games are you playing on Steam?

Kris

Kris

Kris is the older sister of the pair, and has been playing video games since she was able to read. She was introduced to the gaming world mainly by her uncles with the Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 consoles.

As a child, she wanted to grow up to be a teenage mutant ninja turtle, but instead she works a typical 9 to 5 office job. Much of her other time is spent pet-sitting, writing, and role-playing shenanigans in tabletop RPGs.
