When Nintendo released the first teaser to the newest Super Mario movie, I was disappointed we didn’t get to see Yoshi. He was in the after-credits scene from the first movie, so I assumed he’d be a bit part of the sequel. Thankfully, Yoshi finally got his time to shine in this latest Direct from Nintendo about the upcoming space adventure the Mario brothers are about to get themselves into.

I will be honest and say that I completely forgot about seeing the Yoshi egg in the end credits scene of the first Super Mario movie. However, I was thankful to see Yoshi shine in the newest trailer! He’s adorable! I was also glad to see more of Luigi. I’m hoping he becomes a true “Player Two” in this movie to Mario.

It seems like we’re going to get a little more lore, if you will, into the Marioverse through this movie. Rosalina and Yoshi are introduced and, as Kris said, hopefully Luigi will make more of an appearance. We’re headed to space a la the Mario Galaxy games and two scenes looked like they were from Super Mario Odyssey.

I have heard a few “complaints” about the movie trailer floating around the Internet, one of which mentions how “bloated” the second movie seems, what with all of the Easter eggs and throwbacks to multiple Super Mario games. I think it seems to be on par with the first movie, which was also a bit chaotic with all of the tributes to the games that we could spot as we watched. I think folks need to remember that the core audience for these movies is kids, a younger demographic than us gamers who literally grew up with this franchise. It is going to be fast-paced with lots of familiar nods to keep the kids engaged, and I’m looking forward to it.

I have yet to see any comments on the trailer, but I also live under a rock so that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. I can see why people would think that, though. The plot of the first movie, in my opinion, was a little wishy-washy even though I enjoyed the movie for what it was. But that was also mostly nostalgia for me. I was delighted to hear soft tones of familiar game music in the background in certain scenes and picking out which games I recognized. I think that’ll be the same for me with the second movie. However, I’ve never played either of the Super Mario Galaxy games, so I’m not quite sure I’ll find all the Easter eggs. My point is I can understand why the older generation would want a movie “for them” and not just something nostalgic, but I liked it how it was since I am a kid at heart.

Exactly. Enjoying it for what it is and allowing yourself to be a kid at heart while watching these movies is a fantastic way to view this. The first Mario movie was something we were able to enjoy with our young nephews and our cousins, even allowing us to use the Super Mario movie as a segue to introduce the glorious 1993 Mario Bros. movie to our cousins! Despite not having played the Mario Galaxy games, I think we’ll enjoy it nonetheless. The trailers have made the movie look so pretty, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing how Rosalina is portrayed.

Nothing will ever top the 1993 Super Mario Bros movie! But yes, the new movie looks gorgeous. I appreciate what the animators have been able to do with the first movie and from what we’ve been able to see in this upcoming film. My one complaint–if you can even call it that–is that they showed off a bit of Mario Kart and, therefore, Rainbow Road, in the first movie. Maybe that was for the sake of the Easter egg, maybe it was because they didn’t know if the movie would do well enough to get a sequel. But it would have made more sense if they needed to use Rainbow Road to get to the Galaxy (or it would have been a fun way for them to get there, I mean), but we’ve already seen it. If Rainbow Road is in the second movie, it won’t be as special.

The animation studio has done amazing work on the Super Mario movies! Do you know how the Mario characters got to space in the Galaxy movies? I don’t remember positively, although I imagine it had to do with a pipe somehow. They could technically use Rainbow Road to get to space, have it as a little Easter egg where we see it briefly enough for them to drive up the road. I agree that it won’t be as special, but I don’t think it would be a bad option. Speaking of Mario Kart, we haven’t seen Donkey Kong in any of the trailers for the second movie, have we? I imagine he’ll be returning as well, and I’m curious as to what his role would be in the new movie.

I imagine it’ll be a pipe, similar to the first movie. Yoshi probably came from the Galaxy and that’s why they found him in the pipe in the trailer. At least, I’m speculating. I’m sure they’ll get to and from space either by pipe or Rosalina will help them somehow. But it would still be cool to have Rainbow Road’s function be to get to space. As for Donkey Kong… I don’t know if he’s in the Galaxy games, but I can’t imagine they would leave him out of this movie, even if he only has a brief cameo.

Perhaps, but there was also a herd of Yoshi that they passed by during the traveling montage in the first movie. Yoshi as a species could very well come from space, and following Yoshi is how they all go up. I agree about Donkey Kong. If our speculation has any merit, the heroes could return to the Kong Jungle to get karts to drive on Rainbow Road and launch themselves into space. We should be writing these movies. Nintendo, hire us.

Good thing that we don’t have too much longer to wait. The release of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie is April–less than three months away. It feels like they just announced it for the first time, but it’s already right around the corner. I’m not sure if I’ll see it in theaters or wait for it to release on DVD or streaming, but I do look forward to it!

The release date will come up fast! I’m looking forward to it, too. It’s great that the latest video game movies from the past few years have been entertaining to watch. Can’t wait to see the Mario Bros. up on the big screen again!
