Switch Week: Anticipated Games

The Switch will have only 5 games at launch and, honestly, the main one I’m interested in is Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There are plenty of games down the line and, supposedly, there are over 80 other titles in the works for the console, but Breath of the Wild is what I have been waiting for since it was originally announced back in 2013.

(It was announced in 2013…? Holy crap, I didn’t realize it was that long ago…)
I agree, Breath of the Wild is a game that I have been looking forward to for a long time. I’ve been yearning for a new Zelda game and the trailers for Breath of the Wild are absolutely amazing. There are certainly some games they announced that I had looked forward to and some that seemed to come out of left field.

Despite that we only caught glimpses of them so far, I am looking forward to Fire Emblem Warriors and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. More Mario Kart is always good in my book, and I had so much fun with Hyrule Warriors that I’m sure Fire Emblem Warriors will be done well, too. The Fire Emblem series is definitely one of my favorites, and with such a wide cast to choose from, I’m looking forward to seeing what characters and weapons they showcase!

I’m looking forward to watching you play Fire Emblem Warriors! While I want to play Hyrule Warriors myself, I still only know the game from watching you play it. Fire Emblem will be fun, I think. And I am, of course, excited for Mario Kart. I absolutely love that game, but I do wish they came out with a brand new one like Mario Kart 9 or something. I was looking forward to something new and fresh.

I imagine Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will have some new courses, and I know that they’re bringing back the Battle Mode that’s been absent from the past few installments of the series. I agree, though I do find it curious that they didn’t create a new Mario Kart game. Perhaps they were focusing so much on Breath of the Wild to get it perfect for launch day!

Hey, I’ll take what I can get. A new game that I’m looking forward to is Arms. It seems completely new and fresh and I think the gameplay looks awesome. It’s like Super Smash Brothers 2.0, but also an updated version of the boxing game on Wii Sports. The characters are uniquely designed and I think the motion controls will be awesome, especially if you’re playing against a friend.

That game doesn’t seem too bad, I’ll admit. I’m also cautiously curious as to what kind of Sonic the Hedgehog game will come out for the Switch. I haven’t been impressed at all with the recent Sonic Boom games. Rime also looks really interesting. I’m not quite positive as to what it’s about just yet other than it’s an adventure game with an island and a curse, but it looks really nice and I’m looking forward to seeing how it’ll play out on the Switch.

I’m hoping the Switch will give us an opportunity to try out games we wouldn’t normally think twice about. There’s a lot of games we wouldn’t be interested in, but I’m ready to try new things!

  1. I am also looking forward to the Switch but after much thought, I am going to refrain from buying straight from launch day. Breath of the wild is still coming to Wii U and Aonuma has said there is no difference between versions except faster load times on the Switch. My Editor in Chief and bro will be getting the switch and switch version of BOTW so it will be interesting to compare both games. I am interested in the switches launch titles but am not overly sold on them. Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe look great but I already have the originals on Wii U so forking out on half a grand to get a new console and games which I technically already have seems fruitless. I will be getting a Switch in time to play Super Mario Odyssey though. That game looks amazing! Another Great article from you both as always. I do enjoy reading your content.

    • We’re probably not going to get the Switch right away either — we had originally thought to pre-order it, but by the time we actually were able to sit down, watch the presentation and think about it, the Switch was sold out, haha! The only game I’m really looking forward to is Breath of the Wild at launch, and I do want to play it on the Switch, but paying nearly $400 for a console, new game, and possible accessories right away isn’t feasible. We’re excited about Super Mario Odyssey, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. We have the original Mario Kart 8, but none of the DLC and the Battle Mode looks fun.
Thanks very much! 🙂 It’s always great to hear from you!

  2. It’s a weak line-up whichever way we cut it.
Zelda – great, but also available on Wii U. As Mike Scorpio points out, Wii U owners also already have Mario Kart and Splatoon. So what’s the incentive to pay upwards of $300 to play them again?
I love Nintendo, but we’re making excuses for a console that is launching with a version of Bomberman at $50.

    • The launch line-up isn’t too impressive, I agree, but the line-up of games they have scheduled is already beating the Wii U when it comes to titles. The only launch game Rachel and I really care about is Breath of the Wild, but we didn’t scramble to pre-order the console, the game, and possible accessories. We were thinking of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, only because we don’t have any DLC and the Battle Mode seems fun. Splatoon was a franchise we haven’t tried, so it may be something we try out with the Switch as well. I do concede your point regarding the ports, however.
I do believe $300 is on par for a Nintendo console price, if you compare the prices of previous consoles with inflation and with the XBox One and PS4 being one to two more hundred dollars at launch. We’re looking forward to the Switch, but we’re not rushing out to grab it.
      Thank you for commenting! 🙂

  3. Thanks guys, and it’s a good point about the Wii U.
I do want to see Nintendo’s stuff succeed. What’s telling for me is that so many gamers who grew up with Zelda, Mario, etc., are adopting a “wait and see” approach (myself included).
We bought an N64 within the first month or two, the GameCube the same, but I’m struggling to justify this console to myself at this point.
We’ll see how it shakes out!

  4. I’ve always loved Nintendo but considering the launch line-up and the expensive price tag ($475 for us Aussies) I can’t justify getting this at launch. I will probably wait a few months until more games are released. I never purchased the Wii U so Mario Kart 8 Deluxe would be like a new Mario Kart game for me. I am however looking forward to the line up of games they have though especially Super Mario Odyssey, the new Fire Emblem game and the rumoured Pokemon Stars.

  5. I’m excited about a bunch of games as you probably can tell already. Most of them are coming later in the Switch’s life, though I’m hoping they at least make it to holiday 2017. For launch month, I’m definitely picking up Breath of the Wild, Super Bomberman R, Snipperclips, and I Am Setsuna (an RPG I missed). I also want Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, the new Fire Emblem game, and of course, Super Mario Odyssey. I’m particularly excited about the last one!

    • I Am Setsuna definitely intrigues me — I may pick it up just as something brand new for me to try. It’s exciting seeing some other launch titles popping up here and there!
