Friday Favorites: Super Mario 64 Worlds

Last week, I talked about my least favorite worlds from Super Mario 64. While the game is not my favorite from the Nintendo 64 era, there is no denying how much it defined the face of video games!

Cool, Cool Mountain

I enjoy snowy worlds. I think they’re generally really pretty to stare at and get lost in, and they tend to have some awesome music. Cool, Cool Mountain had a decent area to explore as well as a fun sliding race with the penguin. It was always amusing to have Mario leap off part of the level to land stuck face-down into the snow on a lower part!

Tick Tock Clock

Aside from having a fun title, Tick Tock Clock was a good challenge. The different stars were interesting to get and having the level’s speed correspond with what “time” was on the clock when you entered the world was a nice mechanic. The look and graphics of the level was a lot of fun, too.

Rainbow Ride

I really enjoy sky worlds and flying around — one of my favorite parts of Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was soaring around on the Loftwing birds — and Rainbow Ride was no exception. Sure, the flying carpets were a little slow and could be annoying, but they were challenging and did great in showcasing the level.

Friday (Least) Favorites: Super Mario 64 Worlds

Super Mario 64 is one of those classic favorites among Nintendo fans. While it’s not one of my favorite games, I do have a good time playing it with Rachel. However, there are definitely some courses in the game that I would not miss.

Hazy Maze Cave

Does anyone like this world? I feel as if this is the least liked level in Super Mario 64 from what I’ve heard on the Internet. The graphics and music don’t tend to grab me as some of the other worlds do, and every section seems mish-mashed together rather than feeling like an entire world on its own like the other courses.

Dire, Dire Docks

Generally, I’m not a fan of water levels at all. I can appreciate them — like the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’s Water Temple, despite how much of a pain it can be — but having to deal with air meters and swim controls were never my favorite part of video games. At least the water levels have some of the best music in Super Mario 64.

Wet-Dry World

The mechanic of the water level being dependent on where you enter the painting is probably the only interesting thing I find about this level. Other than that, I just find it… blah. Even the area with the house-like structures fails to impress me. Other levels definitely have better secrets and challenges than Wet-Dry World.

Friday Favorites: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Tracks

While I’m not the best racer out there, I’m still having fun playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Rachel did a Top Tuesday of her favorite tracks a couple of weeks ago, and today I’ll be sharing mine.

Mute Citymaxresdefault

Holy sugar, the sheer speed of this course is amazing! It gets insane the higher the CC level you pick, and it’s just tons of fun trying to ram into the other racers. The music itself just keeps you pumped up throughout the race.

Baby Park was originally in Double Dash, one of my favorite installments of the Mario Kart franchise. The course itself my look like a simple oval, but it showcases the pure chaos that is the Mario Kart series with everyone lapping or being lapped on the course. It’s always hysterical and crazy with all the items flying everywhere, so much so that it often gets difficult to tell what place you’re in until you cross the finish line.

This course brought a real sense of adventure, soaring among clouds and sky ships, dodging lightning bolts while trying to reach the speed boosts, and carefully maneuvering around the giant vine-like road. It always reminded me of the battleships from the original Mario games as well as the Rainbow Ride level of Super Mario 64.

Being such a huge fan of the Legend of Zelda franchise, I was so excited to hear that Link and a track of his own would be joining the Mario Kart scene. While we never bought the DLC for the original Mario Kart 8 game, he’s quickly become one of my favorite racers in the Deluxe version, as has his track. The music, the backgrounds, the use of keese and deku babas in place of bats and pirahna plants, rupees instead of coins — the course is chock-full of indulgent Zelda references.

This track is just pure adventure and adrenaline rush. Immediately you start at the top of a snowy mountain and traverse through ice, woodlands, and downward hills. It combines speed and technique, allowing every racer to bring their best strategies to the course.

First Impressions of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Double Jump Kris MiiAnother week, another Monday. Rachel and I got our copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Switch, and we spent a good chunk of Sunday night just playing it.

We really enjoyed it, even though the courses that we played were just the same as Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U.

 

Everyone seems to be playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe this past weekend, unless you were one of those folks who already has Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U with all the DLC. Considering Rachel and I only have the bare bones of the Wii U version of the game, we didn’t mind splurging for the Switch version. We pre-ordered it on Amazon, it didn’t come on Friday, Amazon apologized for the delay and credited our account about ten bucks, and it got delivered Sunday.

We both played a few of the Grand Prix mode, just on 50cc to get warmed up (and, of course, to collect the trophies and everything) and to test the few different modes of controllers. We first each used one half of the Joy-Con, finding it to be not too bad of a way to drive the karts, before both of us used a pair of the Joy-Con.

Rachel seems to prefer the one half of the Joy-Con method while I didn’t mind the paired Joy-Con. We do plan on getting the wheel attachment to see how well they work as well, but for now, we’re okay with each having the Joy-Con.

We did seem to have a bit of an odd time with the motion control and the manual steering at first, but we eventually got the hang of it. We both had a great time picking out different characters and karts to race with, especially the ones that had been DLC like Link (who looks like he’s having the best time of his life during the races and jumps) and Isabelle (who is just downright adorable).

We’re eager to explore all of the DLC courses — hopefully we’ll be able to play again tonight!
