Friday Favorites: D&D Classes

It’s no secret that my favorite kind of characters in video games, especially RPGs, are those that focus on speed and stealth. When Rachel and I played our first Dungeons & Dragons sessions with some friends, I was immediately drawn to the pre-made rogue character and had a grand old time rolling the dice to see what kind of loot I could lift from NPCs. We’ve made our own characters since then and there were several other classes I wanted to try.

Ranger

Ranger is actually the class that I went with when we all began creating our own characters. I found the idea of having proficiency in animal handling and the possibility of having an animal companion down the line to be wonderful motivators. Bow and arrows have always been a fun weapon in video games to me as well, so to translate that into a Dungeons & Dragons character was another good point.

Cleric

I’ll be honest, I’ve never been one to play any kind of healing character. I’d rather be a character who is on the front lines or able to sneak up and stab the enemies. Yet, the idea of being a cranky cleric has crossed my mind more than once. Perhaps one who is quite aware that they are the ones who decides who lives and who dies when it comes to healing.

Paladin

Whenever I play video games, it’s to be the hero, to help save the world. The paladin class sounds the closest to the ideal “hero” archetype, with strong attacks and being able to heal as well.

Bard

The power of music is amazing, and bards are there to make sure you don’t forget it. One of our friends plays bard characters in our campaigns, and she enjoys belting out songs while performing her characters’ actions. My favorite was when her character was being a distraction for some guards while the rest of us almost got our asses kicked by monsters in another room.

Friday Favorites: Ocarina of Time Songs

On our Twitch channel, I started playing through The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on my solo streams. I adore the soundtrack of the game, especially with how much magic is part of the music. Today’s Friday Favorites is dedicated to the songs you learn in the game.

Minuet of Forest

As one of the first songs you learn as adult Link, this song was always a little bittersweet to me. It starts with a high note but patters off like a memory. It’s fitting considering Link is returning to the place that is no longer his home.

Saria’s Song

This was the song that always got stuck in my head whenever we played this game, with its upbeat tempo. As kids, I always thought it Darunia’s dance when you played the tune was ridiculous!

Nocturne of Shadow

The Shadow Temple is one of the creepiest temples in Legend of Zelda history to me, but I adore the tune that goes with it. It’s a solemn song and a little ominous, warning you of whatever danger you’re about to face.

Song of Storms

I love the power that’s in this tune. Not only that, the origin of this song is so amusing to me. You learn the song as an adult from the man in the windmill, who learned it from you when you were a kid. The time loop is great!

Friday Favorites: Game Boy Color Games

Being the 30th anniversary of the Game Boy, this week I dug into my bucket of handheld games from ages ago to find my modest collection of Game Boy Color games. Here are some of my favorites!

Disney’s Tarzan

When my parents — rather, =the Easter Bunny — surprised me with a Game Boy Color Easter morning ages ago, one of the games that game with the handheld was Disney’s Tarzan, most likely because Disney was a familiar company to my parents at the beginning of their video game shopping days. I remember the game to be fun, something shiny and new, but I did not get too far. Still, it was a game I appreciated when I was breaking in my Game Boy Color.

Pokemon Puzzle Challenge

Much like Pokemon Puzzle League for the Nintendo 64 released around the same time, Pokemon Puzzle Challenge was based off of Panel de Pon, but with Pokemon characters, particular characters from the second generation of the game franchise. It was fun and a little addicting with the puzzles, and it was charming to use Pokemon from the Johto region. It was a go-to game whenever I wanted to kill some time.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages

The Oracle duo of the handheld Legend of Zelda games were fun games with unique mechanics. I think I prefer the Ages game over the Seasons, finding it fun how the game’s landscapes and settings changed between the past and present. And you can’t go wrong with the Legend of Zelda franchise!

Pokemon Crystal

All of the core Pokemon games hold a special place in my heart, especially the few from the first couple of generations. Pokemon Yellow came with my Game Boy Color, but I believe Pokemon Crystal surpasses it on my favorites list. The more colors, the animated sprites, the fact that you could play as a female trainer, just a new world to explore was fantastic to me.

Honorable Mention: Rugrats Totally Angelica

I don’t remember when I got this game, nor do I remember much about it. Looking up the game now, I’m realizing that I completely missed the point of it. Supposedly, as Angelica, you played mini games in the mall to win clothes and accessories to then complete an outfit for a fashion show. I have a few vague memories of a couple of mini games, but not much more than that. It’s probably one of the more random games I have in my collection!

Friday Favorites: Sword & Shield Wish List

Like a couple of weeks ago, this Friday’s Favorites post is dedicated to a wish list. With Nintendo’s latest Pokemon direct, there is so much speculation and hope about the newest Pokemon games coming out, Sword and Shield. Here is what I wish to see in the games.

True Co-Op

I have no idea how plausible this is. However, when the Let’s Go duo was released and boasted a co-op mode, Rachel and I were disappointed at it. Granted, it was fun seeing another trainer run around with you in the over world and help out with battles, but it wasn’t what we expected or wanted. I would love to see a co-op mode where your trainer is exploring and battling on their own, but your friend’s trainer is still there in the over world doing their own thing as well. I want to experience the journey with my friend’s avatar there beside mine, even if all we get is just seeing the other avatar running around. Of course, granting us the option to do double-battles together, each with our own Pokemon, against NPCs would be awesome. We’re able to go online with Smash and Mario Kart together — why not Pokemon? (Or would this be too close to a Pokemon MMORPG?)

Pokemon Following the MC

I don’t remember seeing Pokemon following the main characters around in Sword and Shield’s footage from the direct. I understand that not all the footage was from the game and the game itself wouldn’t be finalized just yet, so I’m remaining optimistic that they keep the option of having your Pokemon follow you around as you explore the region. It was adorable, fun, and since random battles seem to be back rather than over world Pokemon, it’ll help the game seem more alive.

A Good Story

I want to be completely invested in the plot line of Sword and Shield’s adventure. I’m sure it’ll boil down to the world needs to be saved by your young MC, but still. Give me a story to truly care about. I adored the story lines involving the regions’ legendaries in the earlier generations, especially Johto and Hoenn, and I severely miss the extra oomph that the stories received in the third-tier games. Speaking of which…

A Third Game

This is obviously a long way off, but I would love it if Nintendo went back to bolstering the story lines of the games with a third game for the region. Crystal and Emerald were some of my favorites and I was seriously disappointed that Black 2 and White 2 existed instead of Pokemon Gray for the Unova region. Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon didn’t bring much of anything new to the Alola region, and poor Kalos was skipped out entirely when a plot line involving Zygarde could have been created to balance out X and Y. I’m hoping Sword and Shield will break the trend of “sequel” games for the Galar region and give us a more in-depth story with a third Galar game.

Friday Favorites: N64 Games I Wish I Played

The Nintendo 64 was a highlight of my early gaming years, but thinking back on it… I didn’t play too many Nintendo 64 games. Rather, the GameCube is our largest collection of physical games. This week’s Friday Favorites is dedicated to the Nintendo 64 games I wish I had tried as a kid.

Harvest Moon 64

I didn’t get into the Harvest Moon franchise until an old friend gifted me with Friends of Mineral Town for my birthday one year. I wonder how I would feel about the franchise had I started with Harvest Moon 64, a game that I’ve heard is a favorite in the community.

Star Fox 64

My first introduction to Fox McCloud was in Super Smash Bros. I had no idea who he was and, even then, I didn’t really think to look up any other N64 games that he could have been in. After Smash Bros., my first taste of Star Fox was Star Fox Adventures for the GameCube which, apparently, is a bit of a departure from the normal formula of a Star Fox game. It would have been great to give the N64 Star Fox a try!

Donkey Kong 64

Technically, I believe we have this game cartridge, although I’m fairly certain we “borrowed” it from family or a family friend and never returned it. I don’t remember playing much of this game, just a few levels here and there while at another’s house, but the idea of the game intrigued me. That, and the theme song was just so damn catchy.

Friday Favorites: Versions of Hyrule

World building is important to me in video games. I love being invested in the land and the people in it whenever I play. The Legend of Zelda games tend to take place in Hyrule and there are plenty of fantastic versions of the land.

Ocarina of Time’s Hyrule

Mainly for nostalgia purposes, Ocarina of Time’s Hyrule is one of my favorites mainly because it was my first introduction to the world. I was amazed at the different races of people and monsters that populated the land, as well as all the different landscapes and dungeons that were available to explore.

Skyward Sword’s Hyrule

Technically speaking, Hyrule doesn’t really exist just yet in Skyward Sword’s time. Instead, it’s called the Surface (or Grooseland, according to one character) since the kingdom isn’t established. I was in love with the graphics of this game and seeing the potential kingdom was fun, even if there were parts of the Surface that I wasn’t too fond of.

Twilight Princess’s Hyrule

If the competition between Wind Waker and Twilight Princess still existed, I would be on Twilight Princess’s side. Twilight Princess probably has some of my favorite graphics when it comes to the Zelda games, and I loved the expansive world I could explore while riding around on my horse. Twilight Princess probably also has one of my favorite versions of Kakariko Village — it’s sparse, but I adore the NPCs.

Breath of the Wild’s Hyrule

A desolated version of the kingdom, Breath of the Wild’s enormous map ensured that there was always plenty to explore and discover, especially with all the Easter eggs from previous Zelda games. It has one of my favorite endgames as well. True, the final boss was a tad easy, but it was in proportion to how hard you worked in helping the rest of Hyrule. The more Divine Beasts you freed, the more help Link had from the previous Champions in defeating Calamity Ganon. The more shrines you discovered, the more stamina or hearts you had for health in the final battle. The better prepared you were, the more skills you practiced, the easier the final fight. Jett, I wish I had this answer when we were talking about it during my Deltarune stream!

Friday Favorites: Super Mario Party Features

Last Friday, Super Mario Party was released for the Switch, much to everyone’s excitement. Rachel and I streamed it last Friday night on our Twitch channel, having a great time exploring the game and being thrilled that it seemed to go back to its roots with a few of the better updated features from the more recent Mario Party games.

Character Roster

Character rosters are usually a hit or miss for me. Fire Emblem Warriors, despite my love of the franchise’s characters, has too many sword users and Mario Kart 8 has too many clones — Pink Gold Peach, all the baby characters, the Koopalings — for example. Super Mario Party has a great character roster with a fantastic balance between the hero and villain characters. While I’m still on the fence with Bowser being on the roster, since I’m used to him being more an antagonist (as much as you can be an antagonist in a Mario Party game), I can’t deny it’s amusing seeing him marching around the board!

Special Character Die

Mario Party games are usually all about luck when it comes to going around the game boards with a bit of skill for the mini-games. With each character having their own special die, it brings a bit of strategy to going around the boards. The standard die allows you to move one to six spaces. Some characters have die that help you gain or lose some coins while giving you a chance to move more spaces than the standard die. There’s a risk with every die, but plenty of chances to get ahead if your plan pans out.

Allies

The allies is a feature that was first showed in Star Rush, which… wasn’t the best Mario Party game. I did enjoy the way the allies were featured in Super Mario Party, allowing you to use their specific character die as well as giving you an extra move or two. Some mini games also include your allies to give you a helping hand. It’s also just really amusing to watch a parade of Mario characters going around the board as your allies follow you!

Mini Games in between Turns

Having the mini games after every turn on the boards is back and it’s amazing! That feature is what defines the Mario Party series for me and I’m excited to see it back. That, and the mini games that we’ve played so far have all been pretty fun. I haven’t had a complaint about any of them yet!
