Pokemon Sword & Shield Updates

Rachel Mii | DoubleJump.comHappy Thursday!

Pokemon Sword & Shield are getting closer to being released. We have a little over two months left to go and they’re still talking about new mechanics and features of the game.

The Gyms

First off, these games are going to have 18 gyms. After Sun and Moon where there weren’t any gyms at all, I’m excited to get back into the gym battles. To make it even better, instead of having the eight gym badges and then moving onto the Elite Four and Champion, there will be 18 gyms to go through – one for every Pokemon type. Apparently, the gyms are split between the major leagues and the minor leagues and I don’t know if you need to go through them all in order to reach the Champion (assuming there is one) or if you can pick and choose. Me, personally, I’d love to battle them all and collect 18 badges (assuming there are badges).

I’m mainly excited about this because the types for the gyms and Elite Four have been so uneven over the years. I made a list of how many times each type is the main for a gym battle or Elite Four member or Champion and it’s crazy uneven. Champions and Elite Four members tend to favor Ice and Dragon types and, of course, even though Dark was introduced in Johto, it has never had itd own gym. Three different Elit Four members have mained in Dark, but there are no Dark gym badges. Fairy got its own gym when it was introduced in the Alola region, but that’s the only time it’s appeared.

I think it’ll be cool to have a gym battle for each type this time around.

Auto-Save

People have been talking about this one a decent amount. There will be an auto-save feature in the game. While I think this is a good idea, I’m happy there will be an option to turn it off. Supposedly, “it’ll constantly save the game” and I like to save before gym battles or if I’m searching for a certain Pokemon. If I try to catch a legendary and miss it, I just reset my game and try again. If it saves after a battle and I missed catching a Pokemon, I’m going to be pretty sad about that.

Still, I do think it’s a good idea to have the option to auto-save, just in case.

EXP Share

In Let’s Go, Pikachu and Let’s Go, Eevee, there’s no EXP share. If you have Pokemon in your party, they automatically get EXP for every catch or battle. It seems as though that will be the case for Sword and Shield as well. I don’t really mind this, though I have turned the EXP share on and off in the past in case one or two of my Pokemon get a few levels ahead of everyone else. There’s no word on whether this will be able to get turned off or not but it’ll be there.

The Best Nintendo Direct Ever

Rachel Mii | DoubleJump.comHappy Tuesday!

It’s weird to get back into the swing of things after a weekend away at EGLX. Something excited happened over the weekend though and that would be the latest Nintendo Direct.

Nintendo put on a Direct on Friday, March 8, 2018. I always get excited about the Directs and, like most people, I get my hopes up for certain games and features. Then the Direct happens and nothing I wanted was announced.

I have to say, however, this Direct was the best one so far.

I was hoping for my usual:

  • A brand new mainstream Animal Crossing game
  • Luigi’s Mansion 3
  • A brand new mainstream Pokemon game
  • Super Smash Brothers
  • A new (good) Paper Mario
  • A new (good) Mario Party
  • Virtual Console features
  • YouTube, Twitch, and Netflix

Did we get all that? No, of course not. But I was still super excited for what they announced this Direct. It was filled with fist-pumping and excitement rather than disappointment.

My favorite highlights for the Nintendo 3DS:

Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story

I still haven’t played this game or any of the Mario & Luigi games. I still hope to though. It seems this game as the same as the last with some newly added features. I’ll be getting it at some point to finally play.

Detective Pikachu

We all knew about this one, but I can’t wait for it to come out. This isn’t a mainstream Pokemon game, but I’ll take any new Pokemon game at this time. Plus, we know they’re working on something else anyway.

Luigi’s Mansion remake

It’s not Luigi’s Mansion 3, but at least Nintendo hears us when we all say we love Luigi’s Mansion. While I love the Gamecube graphics (sue me) I look forward to playing this old classic on the 3DS. I’m still keeping my hopes up for a third game though… maybe they’re working on one for the Switch and this, in a way, is like a teaser.

My favorite highlights for the Nintendo Switch:

Octopath Traveler

We finally got a release date! I’ve played the demo and have been eagerly awaiting more information about this game. They added two new characters and it’ll be out July 2018.

Captain Toad

I loved this game for the Wii U. However, it was too short for me. I wanted more. This seems like a remake with a few extra levels built in. I’ll be getting it. I just hope there’s a good amount of new features added.

Undertale

I’ve never played Undertale, though I’ve seen play-throughs and have heard great things. Kris just downloaded it from Steam and have started playing through it herself. I’ll be getting a copy of this for the Switch though. I’d love to see it on the big screen.

Last, but not least:

Mario Tennis Aces

I was never much into the Mario sports games. I have a couple of them but never really played them that often. This game looks good though. I’m excited to give it a try.

Super Smash Brothers

I don’t think I need to explain this one. People are wondering if it’s a port, remake, or a brain new game. I believe it’s a brand new game with it’s “working title” and also new added characters (such as Splatoon) and Link’s silhouette looks like BOTW Link. It’s a new one, people. We’re excited.

Did you watch the Direct? Did you love it as much as I did? What are you looking forward to the most? Let me know in the comments below!
