Friday Favorites: Johto Pokemon

Double Jump Kris MiiThank God it’s Friday!

Pokemon Crystal came out on the Nintendo 3DS eShop, and I’m having so much fun with it! It’s a fun nostalgic trip for me, and I’m having a great time training up some of my favorite second generation Pokemon.

Ampharos

The Mareep family was always a favorite of mine, and I am missing them in Pokemon Crystal (since, for some reason, they’re only available by trading with Gold or Silver). Ampharos is one of my top electric-types, and its Mega Evolution gives it such fabulous hair, haha!

Crobat

Poison and Flying are two of my favorite types of Pokemon, and Crobat is the best of both worlds. It blows my mind that it’s literally about a foot taller than me in height, but its size doesn’t hinder its speed at all!

Quagsire

Quagsire, with its dual typing of Water and Ground, can be such a powerhouse. Despite how common and versatile they are, I tend not to train Water types, but I don’t think twice about snagging the Wooper line. I think Quagsire is adorable, too, with its dopey looks.

Steelix

The second generation of Pokemon brought about two new types, namely Steel and Dark. Despite that, there really weren’t too many Steel type Pokemon, especially ones that weren’t new evolutions of an already existing line. Steelix, though, I loved seeing. Onix was a favorite from the first generation and I loved the design of his evolution. That, and Jasmine’s Steelix definitely kicked my ass the first time I tried fighting them, so I appreciated the challenge!

Umbreon

Likewise, Dark also became one of my favorite types after this generation, and I adored Umbreon. While I enjoy all of the Eevee evolutions, Umbreon’s design was always one of my favorites, especially its Shiny form. It’s stats may not be the best, but it was always fun to raise.

Flashback Friday: Pokemon Crystal

Double Jump Kris MiiThe first month of the year is almost over! How are you all doing with your resolutions? Keeping up with them, or were they more of a week-long thing?

I’m hoping to keep up more with gaming news, perhaps venturing out further with more online games to try to reach out to more players and friends. Still, there’s something to be said about the older games, such as Pokemon Crystal.

Hey, Pokemon Crystal was released on the 3DS Virtual Console today!

While I started playing Pokemon from the first generation games, it was the second generation where I really started to comprehend the story, the game mechanics, and the characters. I started understanding the types strengths and weaknesses and actually strategizing the battles rather than just tossing my over-leveled Pikachu at everyone, which had been my go-to plan in Pokemon Yellow.

Pokemon Crystal originally came out in North American in July 2001, and it received good reviews, even if the reviews were lower than what Gold and Silver had received. The most criticism Crystal had gained was how it was too similar to Gold and Silver, with critics claiming there weren’t any notably new aspects to the game to make it a “must buy.”

Crystal did, however, update plenty of aesthetic changes, such as updated graphics, animating Pokemon sprites at the beginning of battles, and the ability to play as a girl. The story line surrounding Suicune was more involved as well, along with other changes to the wild Pokemon that are available for the protagonist to catch.

I’m very excited to be going back to Johto with the Crystal version. It’s the Pokemon game that I have the most fond memories of, and it’ll be interesting to dive back into the old-school Pokemon games!

Have you ever played Pokemon Crystal? Are you downloading the Virtual Console version?

Friday Favorites: Wanted Remakes

Double Jump Kris MiiHappy November, everyone!

The holidays are right around the corner, and my mother is already playing Christmas music throughout the house. With the holidays come the video game companies scrambling to come up with publishing dates for their new and exciting games. There are, though, plenty of remakes this year as well, and here are some that I would love to be added to the rosters.

3. Spyro the Dragon

Spyro right now is in hanging around in Skylanders, but I would love to relive his original adventure that was out on the first Playstation console. The mechanics, character designs, and level challenges were awesome, even if some of it was a bit goofy. It was an enjoyable adventure with plenty of exploration opportunities and replay value.

2. Mario Party

So this franchise is actually still ongoing and Mario Party 2 is technically on the Wii’s Virtual Console, but I’m looking for a remake of the original. Give me the rigged one-player games, the ridiculous Bowser events on the board, the blistered palms from the mini-games–Okay, wait, we don’t need blistered palms, I remember how much those had hurt.

Still, I would love the release of the flagship Mario Party game on one of the virtual consoles so I can still kick ass in those mini-games.

1. Pokemon Crystal

We recently had the original first generation Pokemon games released on the 3DS’s virtual console, and being able to play Red, Blue, and Yellow again have been amazing. While I’m looking forward to Sun and Moon, I do find myself wanting to go back to the other original Pokemon games. The second generation was just as special as the first, especially Crystal. I was a little older, a little more video game-savvy, and the Crystal version allowed you to play as a girl.

Hey, representation matters!

Sure, we have HeartGold and SoulSilver for the second generation, but those third editions of the generations — Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum — were always my favorites with the deeper stories. I was severely disappointed when we got Black 2 and White 2 as opposed to a Gray or Rainbow version for Generation 5 and then no third installment for Generation 6 (especially after all the Zygarde fuss — where’s my Pokemon Z?). Although Game Freak isn’t planning on doing other remakes just yet, I think Crystal would be a nice addition to the set.

What are some of your favorite or wanted remakes?
